Student Data Privacy and Technology Use Notice
Our school is committed to protecting your child’s personal information in compliance with Ohio’s Senate Bill 29 (SB29). This law sets important rules about how student educational records and data are collected, used, and shared by the school and the technology providers we work with.
We use certain software and technology providers to support student learning, testing, and assessments. Under SB29:
- Educational records created or maintained by these technology providers are the property of our school district.
- These providers must follow strict rules to protect student data, including not selling or sharing it for commercial purposes such as marketing or advertising.
- Data may only be used to provide the services contracted by our school.
- If a data breach occurs, the technology provider must notify the school immediately.
- When contracts with technology providers end, they must return or destroy all educational records they hold.
- Our school does not electronically track location or monitor audio, video, or student device activity except in limited, lawful circumstances, such as for technical support or safety concerns, and parents will be notified if such monitoring occurs.
Each school year, we provide parents and students with notice of any contracts with technology providers that have access to student educational records. You also have the right to inspect these contracts and ask questions about how your child’s data is protected.
What Are Educational Records?
Educational records are any files, documents, or information about your child that the school keeps and uses to support their learning and progress. This includes things like grades, test results, attendance records, and other information directly related to your child as a student.
Some types of information are not considered educational records, such as private notes made only by teachers, employee work records, or medical records kept by health professionals for treatment purposes.
Understanding what counts as educational records helps you know what kind of information is protected under the law and shared only with approved technology providers working with our school.
Important Note About Some Companies
Some companies may choose not to sign agreements required by SB29 because of their own privacy policies or because they store large amounts of student data in ways that do not comply with the law’s requirements. When this happens, our school carefully reviews the risks and benefits before using their products or services. We remain committed to protecting your child’s privacy and will always prioritize working with providers who meet legal and ethical standards for student data security.
