Students Earn Awards at 2014 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference

Several Penta Career Center students earned awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference held June 23-27, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. Two students, Lexy Rupp (Anthony Wayne) from Penta’s Culinary Arts program and Jared Coker (Genoa) from Penta’s Welding program, earned fourth place awards. Rupp competed in the Culinary Arts contest and Coker competed in the Welding contest.

The following Culinary Arts students earned fifth place as a team in the Entrepreneurship contest and they include: Brandi Alderman (Otsego), Alexis Bailey (Maumee) and Nicole Lambert (Bowling Green), and Jeremy Likes (Lake).

Also recognized at the national conference were four seniors from Penta’s Public Safety programs who earned individual gold awards for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The students include: Jenna Fifer-Crockett (Anthony Wayne), Ryan DeVincent (Oak Harbor), Jared Earley (Springfield), and Evan Deniston (Eastwood). The President’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to these students because they volunteered at least 250 hours to community service projects over the course of one year. During the conference, they received an official lapel pin, a personalized certificate of achievement and a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama.

Penta’s Public Safety senior class also was a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award in the category for Families and Groups. Together as a senior class, they volunteered over 1,000 hours to community service activities during a 12-month period. Public Safety students Nicklas Katafias (Anthony Wayne) and Addison Lane (Anthony Wayne) attended the conference to accept the award on behalf of the senior class.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. The organization provides quality educational experiences such as leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development skills.
